Canace Yan (grade 12)
Kraken, a new ultimate frisbee team formed this year, attended the 2017 BCOS tournament.
The first game was with Jiaxing. “We were very nervous,” said George, the main handler of our team. “Our first game was with a team we totally don’t know. At the beginning we were all flustered. After we won the first point, I could feel the confidence coming back.” The game ended at 6 – 2. Everyone was yelling and shouting. A smile was on everyone’s face.
There was a one hour break between the two games. The next opponent was Sino, the Champion three years in a row. Although we knew there wasn’t a high chance of us winning this game, we still kept calm and full of ambition. “They are more experienced than us, since we are a new team this year, we can overcome them the next year,” said a grade 10 student. “The future will be drawn by us. Everyone wants to bring honor to the team.”
The most exciting game was with Maple Leaf Shanghai. The game ended at the last minute, right as we were about to score. “It was a tough game. There was a point that took almost 20 minutes and the whole game was only 50 minutes. We should improve our control of time,” said Steven, the captain of the Kraken. “What’s more, there were too many fouls in that game. Both of the teams should study the rules more carefully.” Although we lost to them by one point, we identified our problems and are looking forward to having another game with them again.
In the last game with Simo, our grade 10 students brought back the victory. They tried so hard to catch the disk and the result showed that they have the ability to handle the entire game. In the end, we were 5th place out of 8 schools. Mr. Chang, the coach of the team, gave everyone sincere praise. “I am so glad to see students using the tactics we learnt in scrimmages. Our vertical stack is the top 3 in the high schools.” In the games, besides gaining a sense of playing in competitions, we did a great job controlling the offense, but made so many simple mistakes like not catching or throwing the disk. We must be more stable and practice the basic skills, like reading the disk.
