Michele is a grade 11 student from LWBC school. As we all know, to be an international school student, language is a very big problem. But her interest in English led her to overcome it smoothly and happily.
When we think about Michelle, the first picture that runs into my brain is her wearing her big blue headphones. Her headphones are a symbol of her. It is so easy to see that she is a music lover. Her friend told me that she is also an English song lover. I thought that English songs must help her a lot in her English learning. However, she said music isn’t enough for learning. “To learn English, you have to talk, listen, read and write. Only listening to music will not provide you much help”.
She suggested other English learners take notes when they listen to English songs or watch some program. Learning English is hard work. Taking notes means you are working, not playing.
She said that her best subject is ELL. Her English is not so good. She said that English is far away from daily life for Chinese students, so it is hard to learn. Although it is hard, she is attracted to the beauty of English. Not just learning about rules, but poems and fictions. So she said that English is her favorite subject.
“Listening to music helps me a lot,” she said. If she is copying some work or remembering something, she will do it with music around. But if she needs to do some work that really needs her to focus or needs her to create something, she will work in silence.
She loves music. She recommends new music lovers to listen to pop songs from Billboard and electronic music from Beatport.
I asked her if she had an opportunity to meet her favorite star in a private party, but she would miss classes, would she stay or go. She said she would go, but she would rather to miss a Chinese class. But if it was a very important test, she would stay.
Finally she gave a suggestion to the grade 10s, “Don`t waste your time here at Luwan.” She was speaking from her own experience. She said that although grade 10 `s work is easy, you still have to do your best. Do not to relax, remain vigilant.
