Every student has their own unique abilities and challenges. This month’s star student is no different. Eva Jin has been a model student, challenging herself in a variety of ways in an out of class. In her 3 years here at Luwan High School, Eva has exemplified the maxim that “slow and steady wins the race.”

When she first came to Luwan, Eva wanted to be a fashion designer. However, she said that over time she found that her outgoing nature made it “hard… to stay home and design.” She eventually decided on fashion marketing, that way she can keep pursuing her interest in fashion, yet still have the opportunity to interact with people. Eva also shows her outgoing nature through sports. For example, she was a member of the 2014-2015 Luwan Girl’s Basketball Team.

Perhaps Eva’s most outstanding achievement though is her academic perseverance. Like many Chinese students, she found Science and Math to be quite easy, but struggled with English heavy courses. So to improve her marks, she knew she would have to focus on improving her English, and that’s exactly what she did.

Eva did homework on school break time, reviewed after school almost every day and took IELTS courses on the weekend. “Grammar is the biggest problem for us,” said Eva. She explained that in Chinese school, teachers spend a lot of time teaching grammar rules, but not so much at Luwan. So, she also decided to buy herself a grammar book and study it on her own time.

All of this hard work paid off, resulting in steadily increasing marks. Her GPA went from 3.5, to 3.68, to her current GPA of 3.75. This increase was mostly due to improvements in English. This solid foundation will no doubt help her to open the doors of success in her future pursuits.

After leaving Luwan, Eva will be going to a top university overseas. She also hopes to get some work experience in fashion marketing, either through a company or by starting her own business. Who knows, she may even end up helping her parents who own a scarf company. Regardless of what she decides to do in the future, there is no doubt that she has the determination to reach her goal.
