Author: Linda (grade 10)

Jerry is my classmate. He is a boy of many gifts and good at studying anything. As a Taiwanese person, he chose our school because he thought going to Canada to further his studies could make him more competitive. He is also good at learning English and wants to talk with foreign people. He is very ambitious when he talks about his future plan. He wants to get high marks and go to a good university. “The BC program in Luwan Senior High School is very experienced. I think it’s a good bridge to prepare me to enter university. In these three years the program can develop my language skills and build my confidence. It can really benefit me a lot,” he said.

He has already set a goal for his future studies. His goal is to earn an 85% and pass the IELTS exam in grade 11. Now, he also attends extra classes on weekends, although he feels tired taking so many classes. During the week, he brings an English novel to read. As the saying goes “practise makes perfect”. He thinks English ability is developed through steady accumulation. If you do more exercises, you will get higher marks. So, it is a big challenge for him now. He also tells me that balancing his time between the BC program and studying for IELTS is important. He will keep working hard and doing well in everything.

When I ask him about his hobbies, he answers the questions without hesitation: “I like playing basketball. I often watch my favourite basketball team in the NBA in my spare time. I think basketball is always exciting.” He thinks playing basketball can not only make his body strong, but also make him feel cool. Now he plays basketball three times a week in our school.

He is also interested in music. He likes listening to pop music, but he also loves classical music because he plays the piano well. He often plays the piano on the first floor and practices some new music. He thinks music can help him relax. Although he will have more work to do in the future years, he will never give up playing the piano. The piano is his good friend whenever he is happy or upset. “I always enjoy music. It’s a good way to reduce stress.” He also told me about his dream job. He wants to be a DJ and work with music.

You can see how versatile he is! He is not doing well in only one area. He can successfully develop in an all-round way.

I think he really deserves to be the star student.
