Frank Chen is our star student this month. He is friendly, hard-working, and the other students all like to be friends with him. He said that his favorite sport is definitely basketball. He likes playing video games, watching some movies, and reading science-related books as well as other kinds of books during the weekends.

The reason for him choosing the BC program is that his parents wanted him to go abroad and study. He also wanted to improve his thinking and communication abilities, which also led him to choose the BC program over a traditional Chinese high school program. When he arrived in the BC program on the first day, he felt that his classmates were friendly, hard-working, and funny. “I would like to stay with other classmates and share my feelings when I am happy, excited, and sad,” he said with a smile. He also told me some methods and advice about how to study. First, you need to be focused on what the teacher is saying. Second, you should take notes and go over them after class. Third, you should do your homework by yourself before seeking help. Finally, work through some practice problems and ask questions when you are confused.

His favorite class is Drama class with Mr. Law. “I think that the drama lessons are very interesting, and it can improve my English level as well. We play some games, tell jokes and scary stories, and act,” he said.

He is good at drawing. He can draw many cartoon characters and they all look just like the original. He is also good at playing basketball too. He thinks playing basketball not only makes him healthy, but also makes him feel happy. Having both skills in the arts and sports, you could say that Frank is a complete student.

Not only is Frank good at studying, but he also has a kind heart. He always helps other students. When someone can’t understand what the teacher said, he helps him/her to understand all the time. When someone cannot solve a math problem, he can help them to work it out. He always listens carefully in class and does the work very well. Teachers like him very much. He also often reviews the lessons and study extra lessons during the weekends.

Frank told me his dream university is the University of Toronto. He has not done a lot of research about the university, but he knows that U of T has a good medical science program. He told me that maybe he will study medical science because he wants to help sick people. “That’s what I think for now, maybe it will be changed after two years when I am close to graduating. I am still figuring out where my interests and passions lie.”

I think Frank always behaves well. He never copies others’ homework, never ignores the teachers’ words, and is never rude to the teachers. He is popular among the students and respects everyone around him. He is honest. He talks with others with an open heart. He never says a bad word about other students to someone else. He never loses his temper to anyone. When he meets difficulties, he never gives up. With all that in mind, I think Frank Chen deserves to be the star student.

“Oh, god, the provincial exam is coming!”

Which exam scares Grade 12 students the most? That’s must be the English 12 Provincial Exam. The proportion of the English provincial exam is much greater than any other exam in grade 12. As a result, it will affect your grade 12 final score a lot. Basically, the exam takes 3 hours. You will do it from 9 a.m. to 12 a.m. in the computer lab and it usually contains a poem, a story and an informational text. The readings all have their own multiple choice questions and you need to write 3 essays in total. Two of the essays are worth 24 points and the other is worth 12 points.

Actually, our school did it very well in the past. The average score from the 2018 graduates was 14 percent higher than other offshore schools. What’s more, they were even higher than the independent (private) schools in Canada and only one percent lower than the Canadian local public schools.

Sherry (Grade 12) always said: “Oh, I just need a ‘pass score’. That will be so great.”

My classmate, Sharon worried about it a lot too. “Sometimes, the poem is so hard to understand. I can’t even figure out what it is talking about.” After we practiced more and more, it started getting better.

Here are some useful tips:

  1. Arrange your time properly. Don’t spend too much time on one multiple choice question.
  2. You can practice and improve your typing speed.
  3. Try to understand the Grade 12 English literary terms, not just recite them.
  4. Prepare some of your own articles that may fit the essay topics.
  5. Sleep early at the night before the exam.

Last but not least, don’t be afraid of it and also don’t look down upon it. You should not be discouraged if you didn’t pass it. That’s because you will have a second try later in June. Try your best. You can do it!

Ryan, a beautiful name from Ireland, means little emperor. Actually it once was also used as an adjective to describe a boy who is handsome and bashful, but not very tall.

Well, as a very old saying goes, you know someone first from his/her name. From my first point of view, I thought Ryan must be a boy 170cm tall and very shy. But when I first saw him, the following famous saying from Sherlock Holmes came to my mind: “Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth.” Though this sentence probably doesn’t describe Ryan very well, it perfectly describes the shock I felt when I first met him.

He’s tall, really tall, 180cm tall. That’s a major difference from my imagination. He’s also really dark-skinned, which makes him seem healthy and active. I would say that’s the result of basketball, he badly loves it. He looks like an adult Fergus Mac Roich (Celtic Mythological Hero), while I imagined him to be a younger Fergus Mac Roich. In the myth, he was really short and weak when he was young, and he loved exercise. He became really strong and tall after he matured.

As I said, he badly loves sport. But beyond this, he also loves music very much. I’ll tell you guys a secret, he was once a child star when he was 7 years old. He was still a star 3 years ago until his voice changed for he became a teenager. Now he still has a keen passion for singing songs. He founded a band with three other music lovers in LuWan BC and he plays guitar in it. From my sincere wish, I hope their band will become better and better.

Ryan is probably not sure what he wants to do in the future. He likes music as a hobby instead of a job. He really likes the foreign environment rather than staying in his homeland. I’ll bet that’s why he chose the BC program. You know, to broaden one’s horizon and develop international critical thinking.

Ryan is also a fan of ACGN culture. He love to play games like GTA. His favorite female character is YUZURIHA INORI and IZUMI SAGIRI.

Ryan is today’s star student. I hope he achieves his dream soon.

On April 19th, we held our Easter activity.

After three classed in the morning, we held an assembly. During the assembly, we learned from Mr. Berg that there were two evil students, a male and a female who stole all of the Easter eggs. We needed to find their clues in the activities and guess who they are. If no one guessed right, then the team who got the most eggs would win. And at the end of the event, you can exchange eggs for chocolate.

In the computer room, Steven was in charge of an activity to get one more chance to guess the evil student. We were all locked in the computer room. On the table in the middle of the computer room, there were many eggs with letters inside of them. We needed to spell out all the words to get the password for the computer so that we could save ourselves. The essence of the game is to pay attention to the color of the egg, because the same color of the egg meant a word. The pink team was the only team that was stumped for not noticing the color.

The game that Mrs. Dixon was in charge of in the hallway required us to hold a box on our heads with an egg in it. We transferred the egg from our own head to another until the last student finished. This game required students to cooperate with each other and be 100% patient because if the egg falls on the ground, the student has to start all over again.

The dancing game, ran by Faye and Mr. Chang was even more spectacular. The “Rabbit Dance” was shown to some of the members of each group through the computer. They needed to study for five minutes and then teach the rest of the members by memory. Students must try to concentrate, memorize each movement, and come up with easy ways to hand over to other members who have poor dance fundamentals or may claim to be out of sync.

Jason was responsible for the game that tested students’ understanding and judgment. Each student was given a card. They were asked to sit around and describe the words on the card in detail. Students who thought they got the same card stood in a group. There were two rounds in this game. Each successful round was awarded an egg.

The book-finding game, which Sherry was in charge of, was also fun. The clues were really obvious but hard to find.

The event in the afternoon was arguably the most exciting part of the game. The students needed to look for eggs hidden by the evil students in every corner of the sixth floor. After Sherry said start, the students all scattered to try to find the missing eggs. Unfortunately, the green team was disqualified after they were found to have secretly opened eggs before the event started.

Finally, the demon students were Martin and Elin. The gray, red and yellow teams got the first, second, third place respectively.

Our school’s traditional English Olympics were held over the last three weeks from March 20th to April 1st. This activity is held annually. Students from each house team sign up for one or two of the events to represent their house team. If they get first second or third place in an activity, they can win points for their teams. This year, our four activities consisted of Word Relay, Family Feud, Savvy Synonym and Speed Read.

In the first week, we had our two activities: Family Feud and Word Relay. In Family Feud, contestants gave a series of answers to some questions. These questions were answered by all the students at Luwan BC in a survey. The contestants needed to guess the most popular answers to get points. I was glad that grey team and red team entered the finals in this game.

For the other game, Word Relay, one person read out a message and the other person memorized it and went to the other room to write it down. As one of the participants, I found this game very interesting and most students enjoyed it. Some students rushed so hastily that they even knocked down the chairs in order to become the first person to write down the message. Some students even tried to interfere with other teams when other teams were trying to memorize the sentence. However, this only made the game more interesting. Ultimately, pink team and yellow team entered the finals.

In the second week, Savvy Synonyms and Speed Read were held. In the game of Savvy Synonyms, students wrote down the most synonyms of a given word in a limited time. To be honest, though the given words looked simple, it was hard for us to think of some synonyms. It helped me realize the meagerness of our vocabulary. After the activity, I felt our team wrote so many synonyms until I saw some other students grade ten or eleven could even enumerate more.

In the other activity, students were required to read a book in a limited time and answer some questions. This time, they were asked to read economics books. When I saw the book, I thought they could not make it. Then it turned out I was right. I found most of them could answer none of those questions after 10 or 15 minutes. However, still some students did pretty well, such as Delous from Grey team (first place), Jason from green team (second place). This activity requires a large vocabulary and ability to comprehend.

The last week was the finals for three activities. We first had our Word Relay, which was yellow against pink. Both teams encountered lots of nasty words when they tried to spell out the sentence. Under some indications, they successfully spelled out the words and yellow got the first prize. In the game of Family Feud, which was grey against red, red team was initially ahead of grey team by making several savvy guesses. However, the grey team still stole the points by successfully guessing out the most popular answers. In the game of Savvy Synonyms, which was green against orange, we can see that Kyle from green team demonstrated his proficient TOEFL vocabulary and helped his team get first prize.

The English Olympic is quite thrilling for all BC students in our school. Students can not only demonstrate their English skills, but can also have fun in these games. Most importantly, it fosters students’ consciousness of competition.

Shirly Shen (grade 12)

Last Wednesday, there was a big activity in LWBC—Track and Field. All BC students gathered on the soccer field during the lunch break and couldn’t wait to represent their house team to participate.

The first event was female 100 meters. Six girls stood behind the starting line and waited for the signal. Marley from green team showed her athleticism in short distance running and successfully won first place.

The next one was shot put. People threw a heavy ball as far away as they could. Girls seemed not so interested in shot put, while boys quite liked it. For females, Beatrice threw the longest distance. Shirley and Emily followed her in second and third place. The boys seemed more flexible to use different poses. Andrew from pink team is not the strongest, but he had the best score among the students.

The following competition was the 100m X 4 relay race. Each team had 4 boys and 4 girls participate. This game examined the teamwork and running speed, as people should transfer sticks after every 100m. In general, the last person to transfer would be the most important, as they decide the winner and the loser. Every member tried their best to run in order to get honor for their house team. As a result, Pink team had the highest score for boys and Red team for girls.

Finally, the most exciting part of the game was the 1500 meter race. Most students are afraid to take part in long-distance racing, as nobody is used to experiencing a sense of exhaustion. Therefore, I’m so proud of the runners who were ready to compete for their team. First came the girls. Four girls prepared on the starting line, they were Elin, Jessica, Yvonne and Faye. At the end, Jessica took first place, but no matter who won, their sports spirit is worthy of encouragement. Next came the boys. They looked more confident and powerful. After going back and forth several times, Tim from Pink reached the end first and Ryan and Tom were second and third place.

This activity is really impressive and I am glad to see our BC students show their sports talents on the field.

Sherry Wei (grade 12)

Over the past two Wednesdays, students attended the badminton tournament, which was our first sports school event after the Chinese New Year. The tournament was separated to 2 parts: the early round on Mar. 6th and the final rounds on Mar. 13th. The six house teams were combined into 3 big teams, Grey team with Red, Green with Pink and Yellow with Orange.

For the boys, the champion the year before, Price Zhu from Grade 12, showed his strong badminton strategy once again, and made it into the final game. His opponent was Jerry Zheng from Grade 11, who beat their teacher, Mr. Chang, in the semifinals. Finally, Price Zhu won 11:2 and became the champion of the boys for the second time. After the game, he had mentioned that Jason in Grade 10 did well when he played against him, making ending the game at 11:8. We are looking forward to a new Luwan BC badminton star.

On the other hand, the girl’s games were also competitive. In the semifinals, Yvonne Liu and Shirley Shen both from Grade 11 played against each other, but they were actually from the same group. After a friendly game, Yvonne Liu got into the finals. The other player in the finals was Aileen from Grade 10. She had joined in a badminton club before, so she knew the rules and the strategy well. Aileen won the champion in the end.

Congratulations to the champions and their group Green & Pink. Hopefully everyone enjoyed the badminton tournament.

George Li

Hi fellows, this is George writing from Western University. First of all, I would like to say congratulations to all Grade 12 students as I know most of you guys are waiting for your offers. All of your hard works throughout three years get paid off and you truly deserve a cheer for yourself. In the next following months, you are going to make an extremely vital decision that may changes your life forever, that is choosing which university to go. As you may notice, my suggestion is to be You-nique and that is actually referenced from an Ivey alumni’s article and I strongly support his idea.

Probably all of you guys are wondering what is university life in general, but unfortunately, I don’t have an answer for that. Everyone’s experience and feeling could be very different from each other depending on individual choices and that is also the beauty of university life. Don’t worry about all the life details, I am pretty sure your sophs and student groups will answer all your questions and you are invited to experience the campus life on your own. From my prospective, choosing university based on ranking is definitely an unwise choice as going to a “high-ranked” university doesn’t mean you are going to be superior after graduation. The crucial elements determine how successful you are based on how much you learn, including extra-curriculum experiences and ranking of a university won’t help you on that. Statistically speaking, the standard deviation of undergraduate education quality among Canadian universities is not large at all. Each university has their strengths and weaknesses and choosing the one that fits yourself the most and the one that attracts you the most is the key. For example with some business schools, consulting is Ivey’s strength; finance is Rotman’s strength and marketing is Schulich’s strength. That is also the reason behind my choice and it turned out to be a surprise.

Back to when I was Grade 12. To be honest, when I clicked “accept offer” from Western on OUAC, the only attraction for me is the undetermined dream of Ivey, I wasn’t thought about my life at Western at all. However, that all changes at the first day I arrived. The orientation week (O-Week) in Western is definitely the best either in terms of atmosphere or student participations compared to other universities and I am 100% confident about that. The O-Week really gives you a whole picture of what is your life going to be at Western and what you expected to get from the school or sophs teams. Make sure you are taking advantages in the orientation week as you may make so many friends that are very important as sometimes social connections maybe much more important than your GPA in university to believe it or not.

More than that, Western surprises me with their academic atmosphere even though it is known as the party school. The size of a class really surprises me as what I heard about university before is a lecture hall with 500 or even more students, or have to wait outside the class room half an hour in advance to get a seat. All of my thoughts about university lecture turns out to be a big joke as Western is a relatively small university, the average resources student get is much higher than some famous and popular universities. For example, I have great interest in Linear Algebra and my professor is always there ready for help, sometimes we even discuss questions beyond textbook and that really benefits me a lot. Same thing, students at Western don’t need to worry about seat for lectures as the class size is normally less than 100 and you can easily get a seat even in the first role to always communicate and response the professor if you want.

I also prepared some suggestions for all of you on study and the first one is to “study” hard. Don’t misunderstand this tip, it never means sitting in the library and study for the textbook for 8 hours a day and struggle to improve your mark from 95 to maybe 96. Getting a good mark does important in certain ways, but don’t struggle about it, just aiming for an average of maybe 85 to 90% would be enough. Besides that, the key part of “study” itself is all about self-study. University education is actually an open gate for everybody, even though you are not registered in a particular course, you are still welcomed to come by and sit there to learn extra. For example, I registered mainly math courses at Western, but it doesn’t hurt me to attend some business or upper year courses. As long as I am interested and having spare time, I often show up and to see if I am interested in this course. It turns out to be a great way to further determine what I want to study in the following years. Adding on to that, online resources are not neglectable as they are so helpful either helps you understand more concept or takes you deeper in an area. Online resources like Coursera, YouTube, MIT Open Courses and Khan Academy are going to be so important in your university life as sometimes you have to learn new stuff on your own and it’s the same in any universities.

That’s pretty much what I want to say this time, if you still are concerning about certain issues or have more questions on Western, feel free to reach me out. I am more than happy to help.

All the Best!

George Li

As we finish off the first half of the 2018-2019 academic year, it’s important that we take some time to celebrate our achievements at Luwan BC. And we have a lot to celebrate!

Students are continuing to make solid overall efforts and significant progress. With cell phones no longer allowed, I can now often see students spending their lunches making social connections, playing sports, reading English, pursuing personal interests or even just catching up on school work.

It’s also a pleasure to hear everyone communicating in English during chit chat, and often even voluntarily when there is no chit chat. This will undoubtedly help students to achieve their ideal IELTS score and to succeed in an English environment.

Teachers are preparing a variety of engaging experiences for students to push their limits and build valuable life skills. The science labs are increasingly being used now that the impressive renovations have been completed. Impressive facilities!

Luwan BC also really showed its strength in science at the recent BCOS science fair, organized by Nanmo and attended by six different BC offshore schools. One of our teams managed to earn a silver medal with their impressive experiment measuring the speed of light!

I’m impressed by the variety of different passion projects being pursued. Students are marketing real businesses, learning to computer program, creating their own interactive storybooks and preparing public awareness campaigns, only to name a few.

We have also recently acquired a large volume of quality hockey equipment which we have already put to good use through two hockey tournaments. Next term I plan on beginning a hockey club so that students can get more familiar with Canada’s national sport and keep in shape.

I’m confident that students will do well on these midterms and continue to make significant strides into the future. Keep it up Luwan BC!
