Our Principal

Welcome to a new year at Luwan Senior High! I’m excited to greet both familiar faces and those joining us for the first time. Each year brings new possibilities, and this one is no different. Together, we will build a year of growth, discovery, and meaningful connections.

At Luwan, we believe that true success isn’t solely about academic achievements. Yes, we strive for academic excellence, but we also recognize that learning extends beyond the classroom—it’s about fostering a healthy, balanced life. At the heart of our school is the belief that every student is unique, and their well-being – emotional, social, and physical – is just as important. We are here to walk beside you, to listen, to guide, and to celebrate your individuality.

As you step into this new school year, I encourage you to explore the things that spark your curiosity. Be bold in your learning, try new things, and embrace both your strengths and your challenges. Every step forward, no matter how small, brings you closer to understanding your own potential.

We are here to help prepare you for the world ahead, equipping you with the skills you’ll need to navigate an ever-changing future. But more than that, we aim for you to leave Luwan as thoughtful, creative, and resilient individuals who are ready to embody the core competencies and contribute meaningfully as responsible, engaged citizens in a global society.

I’m excited to see all that we will accomplish together this year. As we embark on this journey, let’s approach it with open minds, a strong sense of purpose, and a commitment to supporting one another.

Here's to a wonderful school year!

About us

Luwan Senior High School was established in 1953 in Shanghai, China. The British Columbia Program was established in 2012.

As a British Columbia Offshore School, the BC Program delivers the same curriculum to its students as do schools in British Columbia, Canada. The school is inspected yearly by the British Columbia Ministry of Education to assure that we are meeting the requirements of a BC school. Upon graduation from our 3-year program, students receive a Dogwood Certificate (Grade 12 Diploma). The British Columbia Dogwood Certificate is recognized by universities world-wide.

To help students to succeed in a rapidly changing world, educators need to move the focus away from merely providing teacher-centered delivery of content. That’s why at Luwan BC, we focus on developing the basic skills that students will need for success in life, like reading, writing, math, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. This teaching is delivered through real-world experiences related to students’ interests and passions.

Students are taught in English by BC certified teachers and they use the same textbooks as students in British Columbia. Examples of courses taught in our school include: English Language Arts, English Language Learner, Social Studies, Math, Calculus, Science, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, IT, Visual / Performing Arts, Physical Education and Mandarin.

Upon graduation, students may also receive a Chinese High School diploma. They study certain courses according to the Chinese curriculum, such as Chinese History, Geography and Politics.

Luwan Senior High School offers a wide variety of extracurricular activities including athletics as part of the BC offshore school league, competing against other BC offshore schools across the Shanghai area. We also have intra-school house competitions, student union, and clubs such as Model United Nations, music, Ultimate Frisbee, AP Calculus and French.
