After lunch, a group of team captains gathered around in front of the school bullet boards. Some of them talked about their team’s points with great excitement, while others couldn’t believe their eyes, thinking they deserved more points. What was happening?
About two weeks ago, Mr. Berg announced that each team will have a team flag and that each team was responsible for designing their own flag. That way, four times a year we can celebrate the winning team and raise their flag in recognition of their hard work. This week, the results of the competition were released. Orange team earned 200 points in first place, then came yellow in second and grey in third.
For many students, this was obviously a new event, even some of the grade 12 students said, “We have used our old logos to represent our teams for two years. We never thought of changing the logo. This is absolutely a novel experience.” Mr Berg also said, “The aim of this activity is to foster students’ creativity and make students work as a team. The teachers will evaluate the works based on their originality and skill. Students will then feel proud of their teams when they see their flag raised high.”
In the activity, all teams chose to design a new logo or refine the old logos instead of maintaining the old one. Most teams wanted to make their team look aggressive and competitive. For example, the yellow team changed their old bumblebee logo into a leopard, they said,” The bumblebee we used before looks too cute. I believe the new animal can give others a deeper impression.” The grey team also refined their shark. They drew a knife in the shark’s mouth and a scar on the shark’s eye. Delous, a grade 11 student from the grey team said,” All I did was make our team look cool and aggressive. This activity gives everyone in our team an opportunity to demonstrate our skill and be innovative.”
All in all, this flag design competition brought the teams together through discussing the goal of their flags, designing the flags and participating in the activity in general. Besides, it also provides a chance for students to exert their intelligence, artistic talent and computer skills.
