Welcome everyone to another year at Luwan BC! As we start this new year, I’m eager to recognize our wonderful past accomplishments and to look forward to reaching even greater heights.

Last academic year was our best year yet, with almost every single student in the school making their way onto the honour roll or principal’s list. Students actively participated in extracurricular activities like sports competitions, chit chat, the student council, English Olympics, the Waterloo Math Competition and MUN. These experiences undoubtedly helped to develop a wide variety of student skills.

The grade 12s earned the amazing feat of almost matching native English speaking domestic BC students on their English 12 provincial examinations. They were also all able to pass their IELTS requirements and move onto challenging majors in top universities. 83% of the students got accepted into the world’s top 43 universities. 67% ended up going to U of T, so the strong friendships they developed here at Luwan BC will be sure to continue into the future.

This year we will continue our strong focus on English literacy skills and overall academic excellence. With the introduction of the new BC curriculum, we’re also excited to offer a stronger focus on student choice and on fostering real-world skills for the rapidly changing job market in the 21st century. These skills can be summarized by the core competencies of communication, creative thinking, critical thinking, social responsibility, positive personal and cultural identity, and personal awareness and responsibility. These skills will not only be developed in each course, but also through 80 minutes of time set aside each week for students to develop their own passion projects.

I’m confident that through our collective endeavours, students are laying a solid foundation and lighting their own unique paths through the forest of uncertainty to reach a prosperous and happy future.

Wishing everyone the best in their 2018-19 academic year!
