As we all know, the student council is very important to a school because it takes all of the responsibility for the events and activities such as Halloween and Christmas. Since the last year’s grade 12s graduated, the student council had to be rearranged to bring in some new blood. The school had already started one month, all of the students were becoming familiar with each other and it was just time to hold the student council election. All the students are looking forward to it.

Compared with the previous student council elections, a few students tend to make campaign speeches before the election this year. They visited different classes and provided their speech to let more students know about them, talking about their advantage and their opinion about the student council, to persuade others to vote for them.

Finally, on the first day after the national holiday period 4 in room 222, Mr. Chang started his introduction for the candidate speeches. We begin each year with the selection of two representatives for each grade, with various individuals vying for these places. They were Selina Bao, Emily Chen, Eric Chen, Alicia Hu, and Toshua Sun. They all gave us some excellent campaign speeches. The grade 11 speeches followed, and there were more contestants: Macy Cao, Evanie Han, Milia Lin, Angela Wu, Mary Yang, and Elaine Zhonglu, who were vying for two seats. Following that, we had three candidates contending for two spots in grade 12: Betty Jiang, Carol Shao, and Jeremy Qu.

After listening to all of the representative speeches, the atmosphere of the room became more intense as it was time for the battles of the higher-profile positions to start. This year student council needed to fill 2 Media Officer positions while having four competitors: Rein Guo, Summer Xu, and Lynn Xu. Also, 3 students (Neo Liu, Jenny Li, and Jason Liang) competed for the single position of Treasurer. It was such an intense battle between these students, where they shared their visions of what they would do if they were to be elected.

Position of Secretary, there are two candidates (Alyeesa Zhou, and Darwin Zhu) ran for this position finally, at last, we came to the most exciting part of the election, which is the presentation of candidates for Vice President and President. There is only one candidate– Vanessa Shi competed for the position of Vice President which received a vote of confidence as a result of this, while Richard Xu, Betty Jiang, and Peter Zhu competed to see who would lead the student council this year as the President.

Overall, every candidate gave voters an excellent speech, with the quality of speeches largely improved from previous years: some students provided imagery, metaphors in their speeches, and the votes were tense in that the gap between them was really small: some of the candidates were only two votes short of winning their positions.

On the second day, Mr. Chang announced the final winners of the election. The new grade 10 representatives are Selina Bao and Eric Chen; the new grade 11 representatives are Evanie Han and Angela Wu; the new grade 12 representatives are Betty Jiang and Coral Shao; the Treasurer this year is Jenny Li; the Media Officers this year are Summer Xu and Rein Guo; the Secretary this year is Darwin Zhu; the Vice President of this year is Vanessa Shi, and the President this year is Peter Zhu. Let’s look forward to their hard work and interesting activities this year!

Before winter holiday, we applied our English skills to help local chain restaurants to create an English menu. In this activity, each house team chose two chain restaurants to transform their Chinese-only menu into a bilingual version. Upon completion, each house team presented their work to the ‘chosen’ restaurants and received bonus points as rewards for their effort and dedication for the community.

Our Green team translated the menus for a hotpot restaurant that specialized in beef. During the translation process, teammates ran into various troubles, which included not being able to translate certain Chinese words into English without changing their original meaning and connotations. To increase the accuracy and authenticity of the translation, we needed to do some research to figure out the implied meaning of the Chinese name of the dish. For example, we named our second restaurant as ‘happy stilt beef’ because its Chinese name being “翘脚牛肉” implied that the customers would enjoy the food so much that they would sit with their legs crossed. Therefore, we translated the name into “happy stilt beef” to illustrate the behavior of the customers enjoying their meals. Besides providing a creative translation of the menu, other teams especially Grey all devoted their artistic and designing skills to make the menu look attractive and appealing to the customers.

Overall, this activity helps us earn many house team points. Besides developing interpreting skills and teamwork, we also develop a sense of responsibility to make our community more inclusive to foreigners by providing English menus of many restaurants.

Yellow pumpkins, scary music, bloody scars. When we saw the decorations, we knew that the annual Luwan BC Halloween day was here again.

The student council prepared for this Halloween for several weeks. Under their careful preparation, the whole school was shrouded in darkness and terror. First, when students arrived at school, they saw an arch made of pumpkin balloons greeting them. As we walked slowly along the corridor, we found that all the lights had been tightly covered out. On the seventh floor, where the most terrifying activity took place, they had even set up a “haunted house” which contained cobwebs, piled up chairs, heads hanging by the door and blood stains on the floor. In such a spooky atmosphere, the students could feel that Halloween was really here.

In addition to the fine decorations, the student council also prepared many interesting games for each house team to play. There was a total of eight games spread out on different floors, which were “Situational Puzzle”, “Root Expansion” and “Draw on People’s Back” on the fifth floor and “Woodman on Halloween”, “Little Play by the Host” and “What’s in the Box” on the sixth floor. On the seventh floor, students participated in a role-playing activity and played ring toss games after the scenario was played out.

On the fifth floor, we had three games for each team to play. The first one was called Situational Puzzle. In this game, the host would tell a short story with no plot, but only the beginning and the ending. Students needed to ask several questions in order to find out the whole story. The host could only answer “Yes” or “No” to those questions.

On the sixth floor, there were three main activities. “What’s in the Box” had students choose a box with a number on it, then do some actions related to the number, and then open the box to see if they got a piece of candy or a bomb. “Little Play by the Host” had one host perform a short play, and the other host asked questions according to the play performed before. The students were tested on their attention to detail as well as their memory. In “Woodman on Halloween”, there was also a host dressed as “Demogorgon,” the well-known antagonist character in the TV series “Stranger Things”. The monster would creep up to students quietly coming from the back of the dark room and gently tapping their shoulder with its deformed fingers. If the students looked back, they saw that horrifying image and some students were even scared to the point of falling onto the ground.

In addition to the games played on the different floors, the student council this year planned an overarching theme for the games to connect them. The reason why the sixth floor had been shrouded in darkness was because “The Old Ones” had once again descended onto the world. The students were villagers of LWBC looking to solve the mystery with the help of “oracles” (the hosts) who spoke in riddles. In each house team we set up a “spy,” who was working for the Old Ones. They wanted people from other teams to do specific actions without them realizing they were spies. If the unsuspecting student did the designated action, they were considered “killed” and the Old Ones were one step closer to taking over the whole world. At the end of each individual small game, the host read a short paragraph, which was a hint to figure out who the spies working for the Old Ones were.

In addition to the riddles of the oracles, at noon we needed to find hidden pumpkins around the playground. Among them were ordinary pumpkins, while some others included clues about the spies. Through the previous actions and clues, the other students (villagers) had to identify who the spies were in order to save the world from the clutches of the Old Ones. In the end, the villagers were able to identify the correct spies, and our LWBC Village was saved!

All of us experienced the wonderful atmosphere of Halloween and enjoyed the immersive and interesting activities. People are all looking forward to discovering what the student council has in store for the other festivities of the year!

As we all know, the student council is very important to a school because it takes all of the responsibility for the events and activities such as Halloween and Christmas. Since the last year’s grade 12s graduated, the student council had to be rearranged to bring in some new blood. The school had already started for one month, meaning students were becoming familiar with each other so the time was right for the annual student union election. All the students felt so excited about it.

On October 10th, at 8:00 am, in room 522, Mrs. Fortin started her introduction for the candidate speeches. This year we started with the grade 10 representatives, where we had four candidates vying for 2 representative positions. They were two males and two females: Peter Zhu, Kevin Tan, Jenny Li and Vanessa Shi. All of them gave us some wonderful campaign speeches. Then we moved on to the speeches of the grade 11 students, where we only had two candidates: Heather Chen and Virginia Ding competing for two positions. This resulted in a vote of confidence for the two candidates. After that, came the grade 12 presentations, where we got 3 candidates: Ammie Du, Emily Wang and Roy Zhang competing for 2 positions.

After listening to all of the representative speeches, the atmosphere of the room became more intense as it was time for the battles of the higher profile positions to start. This year student council needed to fill 2 Media Officer positions while having four competitors: Vivian Cai, Milo Yin, Marley He and Elyn Wang. Also, 2 students (Fiona Lu and Anita Zhou) competed for the single position of Treasurer. It was such an intense battle between these students, where they shared their visions of what they would do if they were to be elected.

For the position of Secretary, only one candidate (Christina Zhou) ran for this position so it was a “Yes or No” vote here as well. Finally, at last, we came to the most exciting part of the election, which is the presentation of candidates for Vice President and President. Scott Shi and Ryan Cheng competed for the position of Vice President while Beatrice Ding and Jason Huang competed to see who would lead the student council this year as the President. Every candidate gave voters a wonderful and excellent speech and the votes were tense in that the gap between them was really small: some of the candidates were only two votes short of winning their positions.

At the end of the day, Mrs. Fortin announced the final winners of this election. The new grade 10 representatives are Peter Zhu and Vernessa Shi; the new grade 11 representatives are Heather Chen and Virginia Ding; the new grade 12 representatives are Emily Wang and Ammie Du; the Treasurer this year is Fiona Lu; the Media Officers this year are Marley He and Milo Yin; the Secretary this year is Christina Zhou; the Vice President of this year is Scott Shi; and the President this year is Beatrice Ding. Let’s look forward to their hard work and interesting activities this year!

The new school year means that the student union will be elected again!

Unlike in previous years, this year’s student council election was unusually fierce. On September 18, there were four candidates who ran for the president, four candidates who ran for the vice president, and four candidates who ran for treasurer. Also, there were three candidates running for two communication director positions, three candidates running for two Grade 12 representative spots, and two candidates running for secretary.

Scott Shi, one of the Grade 11 candidates who ran for the secretary position, had a passionate presentation on opportunities. He described the tremendous difference between zero and one. He said that people should seize the opportunity, as zero provides zero possibility; however, 1 vote for him could result in a happy school year.

Secondly, the intense competition between Jason and Jerry who both come from Grade 12 had pushed the election to the climax. Jason Cui, as the one who was in student council last year, maintains that people who have more experience should take more responsibility and would have greater capability, which facilitates the formation of the new students council. This felt like a jab pointed directly at Jerry Cheng, who had never joined the student council before. But Jerry Cheng was not overwhelmed by Jason’s attack. He believed that people who really own leadership don’t need titles. Instead, being energetic, being united, sharing comprehensive ideas are the better way to present what is leadership.

The result of the election released pretty soon on Friday, September 20. Jerry Cheng became the new president. Since George Cheng and Faye Jin received equal votes in the election, both of them became the new vice presidents. Delous Zhu and Ryan Cheng were the new communication directors. Beatrice Ding was the treasurer, Scott Shi became the secretary and there are also six representatives from all three grades. Congratulate to all of you and I hope everyone in LWBC will have a fantastic, fulfilling, and unforgettable school year.

“Jingle Bell, Jingle Bell, Jingle all the way…” Welcome to the LWBC annual Christmas event!

Christmas events are always one of the BC students’ favorites. Secret Santa, teacher and student performances and decorating the classrooms are all exciting parts. We received a video made by the alumni as usual. They introduced their current study life in foreign countries and best wishes. What’s more, they also gave us several suggestions, which were very meaningful and useful.

“Exchanging presents is my favourite part” Nancy in grade 11 said. “I was so happy when I opened my gift last year. I felt that the presents were really carefully selected.” The most attractive point is it’s mystery. Your gift is from a secret Santa, and you don’t know who he or she is. The rule is that you are given a member in our school randomly, and chose a gift for he or she. And you will sign “Secret Santa” instead of your real name. All of the gifts will be packaged beautifully and put under the Christmas tree. At last, you’ll find your own present and open it at the proper time.

The performances always make everyone feel quite excited. There were about 15 performances and interesting activities on the list. The grade 10 band performed Counting Stars for us and got positive feedback. After that, Nancy and I danced to the song Forever Young. Later we listened to a piano and violin solo. Furthermore, we had some standup comedy from Steven, which made us laugh a lot. Surprisingly, Mr. Chang brought a Chinese rap and then teachers and sang a song together for us.  “I think the performances were very wonderful. It gives us a chance to let students show their talent and ability” grade 11 Jane said. “And I suggest that we can make different prizes for those amazing performances.”

“Well, I believe our Christmas gala is pretty awesome with almost everyone’s participation every year and it is kind of our BC tradition. I remembered last year I was the host for the gala; all the performances were well organized and prepared with student’s efforts. We really enjoyed this party for sure,” Sherry from grade 12 said.

“I hope it will be an unforgettable memory and we can have a good time. We are really looking forward to our present from secret Santa!” Grade 10’s Roy said, someone who had not experienced BC’s Christmas yet. Generally, I’m pretty sure it will be as great as your expectation.

“Oh, Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells Jingle all the way,”

“Oh, what fun it is to ride in a one-horse open sleigh.”

On October 31st, many students dressed in strange clothes gathered on the sixth floor of Luwan Senior High School. They were celebrating Halloween.

We had 7 games that day: “Battle of Balloons”, “OH! Candies”, “Who is the Witch? ”, “Pumpkin Collectors”, “Poke a Pumpkin”, “Please don’t do that” and “Zombie Run”. Except for “Zombie Run”, we did these 6 games in 6 different rooms with 6 teacher and student leaders from the student council in each room. 6 teams went to different rooms to play the games at the same time. The “Zombie Run” took place in the middle of the day on the school playground.

During the game “Battle of Balloons” in Room 613 with Mr. Ruelle, students were divided into boys and girls. For the boys’ round, JG was the male champion of our pink team. For the girls’ round, Vivian was the female champion of our pink team. They didn’t pop everyone’s balloons. Actually, Jacky, Eva, and Candice went out of the scope of the game, so they were disqualified.

During the game “OH! Candies!” in Room 606 with Ms. Dixon, a student often rolled doubles with two dice before last student put on all the clothes. Only Levi and Tim got the chance to eat lots of candies. An interesting thing was they all said that they didn’t want to eat any more sugar after this game.

During the game “Who is the Witch? ” in Room 607 with Mr. Berg, Tim got “chocolate” while others got “candy” in the first round. His identity was discovered by Andrew. The others just followed Andrew’s choice. In the second round, I got “Witch” while others got “Zombie”. Unfortunately, I was the first one to speak, so I was discovered by JG.

During the game “Pumpkin Collectors” in Room 609 with Faye, we found these cards as soon as possible. We could answer 5 of them easily, but we were stopped by the one asked when WWI stopped? This problem puzzled us for a long time, but luckily, but Andrew got the answer at last. We gave him a candy as a reward.

During the game “Poke a Pumpkin” in room 604 with Steven Zhu, we threw the pens one by one, but only Levi and JG got a candy from the paper cups. Since Levi had already eaten a thousand candies in “OH! Candies!”, he gave up eating it.

During the game “Please don’t do that” in Room 608 with Mr. Chang, Mr. Chang did the first kill to kill himself. His card was “say a name” and he wanted to let JG say whose card was “say Halloween”, so he said “Hey! JG…” and he killed himself. The other one who lost the game was Tim. His card was “eat a candy”. At the beginning when Mr. Chang gave him a candy, he refused to eat it. However, Levi fed him a candy and he ate it. What a pity!

During the game “Zombie Run” on the school playground, each team chose a student to be the zombie with teachers. Daniel Cheng, Price Zhu, Ryan Cheng, George, Scott and I were the zombies. The most interesting event happened between Daniel Cheng and Sherry Wei. Sherry tried her best to run and even run to the other side of the playground, but it was really easy for Daniel to catch her.

We had our final Balloon Battle among teams in the afternoon. During the male’s game, JG was the first blood killed by Daniel Liu. When he was killed, he even didn’t notice that the game had already started. Then Jerry killed all of the others except for Price. Price was the champion at last. During the female’s game, Yvonne popped her balloon. Then Vivian and Jane did their final one vs. one battle. Vivian won.

Finally, we chose the one whose costume we liked most from Sherry, Patrick, Micole, Yvonne, Price, George, Jerry, Fancy, Beatrice and Steven. Steven took the first place, Beatrice took the second place, and Jerry took the third place.

Every year’s Halloween events are interesting and thoughtful. Thanks to our student council members and teachers who helped organize these great events.

September 28th, after nearly one month of applications and competitions, the results of the student council election were published. Two days later, Mr. Berg introduced the new student council members to all the students in the school assembly. Here are the results:

PRIME MINISTER: Sherry Wei from Grade 12. She will take the lead of the student council this academic year. If schoolmates have any suggestions or questions about the operation of the student council, they are welcome to communicate with her.

DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER: Steven Zhu from Grade 11. He will assist the prime minister in leading the student council, especially to ensure that every member is working responsibly and the decisions the student council makes are appropriate.

MINISTER OF COMMUNICATION: Fancy Sun from Grade 11. She is in charge of recording the student council meetings and helping the other members do time-consuming works if necessary.

MINISTER OF FINANCE: Jack Ye from Grade 12. He is the treasurer of the student council, taking charge of making purchases. He will find cost effective items for school events.

MINISTER OF SCIENCE AND SPORT: Jason Cui from Grade 11. His job is to coordinate various school events, including the plans and preparations of sport games and festival celebrations. Students are welcome to give him suggestions and offer him help in organizing school events. Their ideas will no doubt improve their own experience of the activities.

MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS: Delous Zhu & Faye Jin. They are responsible for the advertising of school events both online and offline. Additionally, they are in charge of several social media accounts organized by the student council, such as Wechat and Weibo. Their great work last year helped the Grade 9 students and their parents know about the Luwan BC program better.

In addition, there are also two grade 10 representatives in the student council, Emily Huang & Fiona Lu.

Congratulations to all of them! Hopefully the student council can work well this year and bring everyone an excellent high school experience.

A traditional activity for all Luwan BC students and teachers, the Christmas Talent Show, was held on December 22nd. All of us enjoyed a fantastic Christmas celebration.

At the beginning of the show, we had the traditional section, the “What do you want for Christmas?” video and video of greetings from Luwan’s alumni, edited by the media students in the student council. Everyone gave their holiday wishes and the student council encouraged and wished everyone a happy new year at the end of the video. Some alumni also came to the talent show that day and watched the performances with us.

Then we had well-prepared performances from teachers and students. The performance that students enjoyed the most according to the wechat survey is “Shape of You” by some girls in grade 12. The band’s performance was unbelievably amazing. Also, the Chinese Comedy by Andrew and James in Grade 10 really cracked me up. They coordinated smoothly on the stage and brought us enjoyment. What’s more, the most surprising performance was Mr. Ruelle’s hip hop. When last term started, I heard that he was a rapper. While it was my first time listening to his hip-hop, to be honest, I still thought he was a talented rapper and I am truly looking forward to hearing from him again.

After all the performances, we had secret Santa gift exchanges. I believe that the most special gift students got from secret Santa is George’s pillow. His Santa printed a picture of George dressed up in his Halloween costume. “This is the best day of 2017!” he said. I could feel his happiness when interviewing him.

You can still feel the Christmas atmosphere on the sixth floor, where BC students study. I am proud of everyone’s hard work for the Christmas Talent Show. Also, I have to say thank you to the student council since they spent money and put a lot of effort decorating the hallway and Christmas trees, editing videos and publicizing the events before and after the celebration. Shining, a Grade 12 student said, “This is my last Christmas in Luwan but it is the best Christmas I’ve ever had and I will never forget it.” Finally, I wish everyone a happy new year.

The Halloween party is one of the Luwan students’ favorite events. Not only because it’s a day with little school work, but also because of the fun activities.

If we are talking about the Halloween party, we have to talk about the games. This year, we kept some classic games like “Mummy Wrapping”, “Battle of the Balloons” and “Zombie Run”. We also introduced some new games such as “The Werewolf”.  Grade 10 student Delous gave a thumb up to “The Werewolf”. She said “It’s really hard to play this game in English. You have to ‘cheat and trick’ other players, but luckily, I made it. I survived.” “Zombie Run” also got a lot positive feedback. Students liked it because the teachers play this game with students rather than being hosts or judges.

The costumes are another key element of the LWBC Halloween party. This is the day in which students can forget about their school uniforms, wear whatever they want and wear fancy makeup. Jerry is the winner of “Best Costume”. He dressed up as a huge, cute banana. He was always in the spotlight. Everyone wanted to take a selfie with him! His costume reminds me of that Andy Warhol painting for The Velvet Underground. Mr. Chang’s dinosaur outfit is also a high light of that day. “It’s quite a challenge to try to teach as a t-rex, but the students enjoyed the costume so it was all worth it,” Mr. Chang posted on his WeChat moment.

This years’ decorating is also enjoyed by all the students. “It feels great to study in this kind of classrooms,” grade 12 student Jerry Li said, “there are broken legs, broken fingers and even a broken heart! I love this atmosphere.” Faye, the media officer said that she likes the hallway decorating style, “The ‘Lantern drawing’ activity is really cool. We drew the lanterns into jack-o’-lantern or pumpkins. They are both scary and cute. I took a lot of photos and I am going to pose them on our official Weibo. It is a great warm up for the Halloween. Everybody can participate in it.”

Upon hearing students were all really in to this party, Sherry the event coordinator of the student council smiled proudly, “For me the best part of it is organizing it. It is a challenge for us since it was the first time for most of us. It is a good expense.  I finally understand how many works should be done before you guys can just walk in and enjoy.”

This year’s party is over. Hope that next year’s student council will bring a better one.
