CINEC Star Student Program is for promoting and recognizing excellence in the CINEC community. This program aims to celebrate the exceptional achievements of our students and provide them with well-deserved recognition. Through a rigorous selection process, we have identified the star students for the academic years 2022-2023, who have demonstrated remarkable qualities as leaders, achievers, and active participants in various aspects of their educational journey.

The selection process for the Star Student Program involved careful evaluation and consideration by our dedicated teachers. They assessed candidates based on specific criteria that highlight academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership skills, and a list of awards and achievements. The criteria ensured that the chosen students truly embody the spirit of excellence within our community.

Without further ado, we proudly announce the Star Students for the academic years 2022-2023:

Grade 12: Peter Zhu and Carol Shao

Grade 11: Darwin Zhu and Milia Lin

Grade 10: Selina Bao and Toshua Sun

These students have consistently demonstrated exceptional qualities that set them apart from their peers. Millia’s vivacious and cheerful personality sets a vibrant tone within the school environment, inspiring other students to actively participate in various endeavors. Carol, known for her helpful nature, exhibits a warm and friendly attitude toward others, offering assistance whenever needed.

The Star Student Program not only recognizes students for their academic excellence but also acknowledges their involvement in various extracurricular activities. These activities can include participation in school clubs, musical performances, and sports. By encouraging students to engage in such activities, we aim to foster a holistic educational experience that nurtures their talents and passions. For instance, Peter and Darwin have been actively involved in the Frisbee Club, showcasing their enthusiasm, dedication, and positive contributions to the team. Their commitment to extracurricular pursuits is an inspiration to others, highlighting the importance of well-rounded development alongside academic achievements.

Moreover, the program emphasizes the importance of leadership skills. Students who have taken on roles within the student union, captained sports teams, or exhibited outstanding leadership within the school community stand out as exemplary leaders. Their ability to inspire and motivate others is a testament to their exceptional qualities. Selina Bao and Toshua Sun demonstrate exceptional leadership skills, effectively organizing and coordinating team activities to steer the group towards shared goals.

We interviewed all the 2022-2023 star students in LWBC. As G12 students, Carol and Peter have been interviewed on “how to become star students”. They gave some suggestions for younger students and future students. Carol emphasizes the importance of setting goals and maintaining motivation and focus. She reminds students to prioritize helping others and ensuring their own health throughout the process. Also, being a star student goes beyond grades and involves enjoying the process of learning, working hard for personal growth, and becoming a well-rounded individual. Peter emphasizes the need to develop all-around abilities. Active participation in class discussions, group projects, and extracurricular activities is encouraged. Peter advises students to stay organized by managing their schedules and tasks effectively. Breaking down study goals into smaller, achievable tasks and creating a balanced study schedule that includes leisure activities is essential. Building confidence, facing challenges with perseverance, and celebrating successes are additional points Peter mentions. G11 students Darwin and Millia were interviewed on “How to Achieve Leadership”. Darwin believes that leadership is a journey of personal growth and development. He actively challenges himself and reflects on his strengths, weaknesses, and values. By understanding his advantages, he can effectively utilize them in areas he is interested in. Darwin also emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, actively seeking opportunities to expand his knowledge and skills. He participates in scientific research projects and courses during his spare time, embracing failure as an opportunity for improvement. Overall, Darwin sees every experience as a chance to learn and adapt to the world. According to Milia, leadership is a dynamic and ongoing process that requires dedication, self-reflection, and the ability to inspire and influence others. She highlights the significance of developing a clear vision and setting goals that inspire both herself and others. Effective communication plays a crucial role in leadership, as it allows for clear articulation of the vision, expectations, and ideas. Milia also emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and self-improvement. She believes in investing in personal growth through various means, such as reading, attending seminars, and seeking mentorship. By embracing new ideas and challenging assumptions, Milia strives to become an effective leader. Selina and Toshua, two 10th grade students, were interviewed on how to quickly adapt to BC high school. Selina believes that keeping a positive attitude is essential when adapting to high school life. She encourages exploring new opportunities, such as joining clubs like the frisbee team or debate club, which can help make new friends and discover passions. Selina shares her experience of joining the handball club, which facilitated bonding with classmates and forming friendships. She reassures others that feeling concerned is normal and suggests looking at the bright side. In the context of BC courses being taught in English, Selina advises asking questions to clarify any confusion and taking advantage of the supportive teacher system. She sees high school as an exciting new beginning. Toshua acknowledges that becoming a high school student, especially in the first few months, can be challenging. His approach to adapting to high school involves adjusting the learning pace. Toshua recognizes that high school is generally slower-paced than junior high, allowing for more spare time. He utilizes this spare time effectively by learning about Canadian culture, understanding the criteria for high-level learning in each subject, and getting to know his classmates better. Toshua believes that these actions better prepare him for the challenges he may face and reduce the chances of feeling overwhelmed in the new environment.

We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the Star Students for their remarkable achievements. Your dedication, hard work, and commitment to excellence have earned you this well-deserved recognition. We encourage you to continue pursuing your passions, leading by example, and making a positive impact within the CINEC community and beyond.

Congratulations to all our Star Students! Your unwavering commitment to academic excellence, involvement in extracurricular activities, and remarkable leadership skills have truly set you apart. We are immensely proud of your achievements and look forward to celebrating your success at the upcoming award ceremonies.

Get ready to hear the story of our school’s glory while competing in the Waterloo Math Contest! From the BC Program of Luwan Senior High School – Milia and Toshua, who not only participated but also achieved an impressive score of 36/40 in the Hypatia contest and brought honor to our school.

The Waterloo Math Contest, a world-renowned competition, is hosted by the University of Waterloo in Canada. Each year it attracts many students from around the world to attend this contest. It includes several different competition categories, each targeted at students of different grades and levels. For example, the Galois is primarily for 10th graders, while Hypatia and Euclid are for 11th and 12th graders. This contest is highly approved globally and considered as one of the most important competitions to measure students’ mathematical abilities. Both Toshua and Milia made the most challenging choice, because they chose to do not one, but two contests: the Hypatia and Euclid contests, prepared for the genius grade 11 and 12 math students. Hypatia primarily involves sequences, algebra, and basic trigonometry, while Euclid covers even more challenging issues such as number theory, logarithms, geometry, and probability.

So, what’s the key to their excellent performance? Milia shared her preparation strategy, “The first step is understanding the scope of the exam. Secondly, familiarize yourself with the relevant formulas – including those that can be used directly and those that require derivation. The next step is practicing past papers and questions related to specific knowledge points, focusing mainly on your weak areas. For me, that was analytic geometry. Lastly, summarizing specific problem-solving methods helps in solving similar problems during the test.” Hypatia and Euclid cover a broad range of topics, some of which are not even taught in textbooks and require participants to self-study before the competition. Milia’s strategy is like a detailed map and the knowledge and formula in it guides her walk out the maze, ultimately leading her to victory.

Our other participant, Toshua, chose a more direct path to review for the contest. “I just practiced a few sets of past contests to familiarize myself with the questions that appear in the contest” he said. Reviewing past questions can be very useful for this type of competition, even though the competition problems change every year. Toshua’s strategy of becoming familiar with past questions provided him with a comprehensive understanding of the various types of problems and the required methods and prepared him for success.

Milia and Toshua’s victories in the Waterloo Math Contest not only demonstrated their individual talents but also represented the high-quality teaching of the BC Program at Luwan Senior High School. Their success is not only due to their own efforts but also the responsibility and seriousness of the teachers during their class. In conclusion, let us congratulate these two students and our school on their wonderful achievements and hope that their success can inspire future students to learn from their experiences and achieve even better results in future Waterloo Math Contests!

On the 10th of March, we finally went on another spring outing after two years! After about 3 hours, we arrived at the entrance of the Ocean Park together. We first went to the entrance of the park and took some great group photos. The teachers also posed for different pictures to record the excitement of the trip together.

After a short time, we split up into groups and started to wander around the park. We visited many attractions related to underwater life and even got to experience feeding the sea creatures and interacting with them in various ways.

Being a marine park, most of the students were excited to first visit the dolphins, otters, sea lions, walruses, fur seals and other marine mammals. Next, depending on the plans, students who love animals went on to visit the Mermaid Square, Polar Town and the Antarctic Penguin House. After an intimate interaction with the animals, many of us went to the other side of the park via the Arctic Bridge or the Cable Car.

Apart from the coral jellyfish and Underwater World Pavilions, students who love thrill-seeking sports often take part in jumpers, roller coasters and some more courageous activities. The queue for the roller coaster was still very long, up to five minutes before it was time to leave, which shows how exciting and attractive the ride is. The next second you get on the rollercoaster, your body is already flying out with the coaster, but your soul seems to remain in the starting point! The vast majority of people would choose to release their fears by screaming, and the stress of studying proved to be greatly relieved after the rollercoaster ride.

By the afternoon, most of the students had made their way to the shows. The orca show that day was very impressive, for example, the students sitting in the front row always got wet because of the water waves from the orca’s tail. The dolphin and sea lion shows were also very impressive. There were also beautiful ladies dressed like mermaids performing shows with marine animals.

Year 12’s Jason said, “I got to see a lot of sea life and we participated in the roller coaster 5 times, and overall it was a really enjoyable experience. Also, after all the stress of studying, we finally had some fun with the students and the teachers, so I think it was great.”

Jeremy from G12 said, “As our last spring trip in high school, I was really excited to be able to enjoy the last fun with my classmates in March, and it will be a great memory for us. Haichang Park was a lot better and more fun than we thought it would be, probably because it was my first time there. The roller coaster was exciting, and I got to ride it uncontrollably five times!”

Daisy from G10 said, “I had a great time at Haichang Ocean Park in Shanghai. When I was at the aquarium, it was the first time I saw a real beluga whale so close, with only a piece of glass between me and it. I was amazed at the presence of such a huge animal in the ocean and the cooperation between humans and animals in the show.”

Zoe from G11 commented, “One of the most memorable shows at Haichang Park is the Beluga Whale Show. Two beluga whales danced in the water with the divers, sometimes floating up and sometimes sinking down. A few rays of sunlight spilled from above the tanks, adding a touch of spirituality to the dimly lit arena. We soaked it all in and enjoyed this unforgettable show.”

In a nutshell, the Haichang Ocean Park was an amzing experience for LWBC students and teachers. It provided an enriching opportunity to learn more about marine life while creating lasting memories with classmates and teachers.

Ultimate Frisbee as a recent new sport that makes people very curious, and it is precise because of this that more and more people have participated in this new sport. Fortunately, we at Luwan BC had great interest and enthusiasm for Frisbee before the new movement and thus founded the Frisbee Club. In the high school competition, the most famous is also the competition in that most high school teams that play frisbee will participate in — the Shanghai Youth Open-IX opened, and our frisbee club Kraken at Luwan BC naturally participated and saw a wider sky there.

First of all, two teams are competing in the SHYO competition, and there are a total of 8 teams competing with us, among which there are weak and strong teams. Due to the two-year pandemic, as well as the departure of the teams and the addition of new ones, the overall strength has changed. Because of this, we all tried our best to deal with our opponents, but the results were not satisfactory.

Although our team has some good throwers and handlers, perhaps due to experience, there is no good awareness of the position of the set, and most people like to surround the thrower so that the handlers cannot give the set. Some people block the position of the thrower, and at the same time, the opponent will block the route of the thrower, resulting in the failure of the throwing and giving the right to the opponent. This is the biggest mistake our team makes, and if we can improve this, we may be able to beat most of our opponents. At the same time, our team is not very skilled in the use of the rules, and we can’t notice when we or our opponents commit a foul.

Of the opponents against us, I think the best team is Hurricane. They are the favorites in this tournament because this team includes a player from the French national team, who also lived up to expectations to earn second place in this competition. However, I think this team made it to the finals because of their cooperation. When one person receives the set, the other person, or most of the people, are ready to take the next set. At the same time, the bounce, physical fitness, and endurance of their team members is good, with a solid foundation and strong sense of receivership, making them the winning side.

In this competition, although we did not achieve a good result, we gained something more important and discovered our biggest mistake. I believe that when we solve this problem, Kraken will take it to the next level.

During April, the teachers set up two amazing house team activities, which is English Olympic Games and making the greatest trebuchets. On that day, during the first activity, it goes with two rounds, and has six tasks. Each house team needs to be divided into three groups. We played Boggle and Synonym. The most impressive game in my mind is Boggle.

For the game Boggle, it is a timed game (3 mins) where players compete to find as many words as possible within a grid of connecting letters (5×5). The letters that make up the words are horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Players need to find as many words as possible. Every common word is one point. Each round has a significant word, and each word that is related to it, it will get two points. In addition, only the group that comes up with the words that other groups don’t have can score.

During the first round, two teams did a good job. They got 8 and 9 points respectively, and were far ahead of others. It is worth mentioning one to two groups often came up with some extremely short words like “OK” or “K.O.”. Then the second round was a deciding game. They used their creative thinking skills to be competitive in the game. However, all of them lost one vital word that played a decisive role. When the teacher spelled it out to them, they found it obvious, but really complex to get that word out. This competition was so intense that the score was tight between the first and second place. At the same time, this game encouraged players to think quickly and creatively while developing their word recognition and pattern recognition skills.

Next, for the trebuchets making, every team needed to design three trebuchets. The team that is able to make the greatest trebuchet will win, which means the trebuchets that can throw the marbles the farthest will be the champion of this game. Each team are provided with skewers, glue guns, rubber bands, bottle caps and marbles. At the beginning, each team had a designer to make blueprints. They used creative thinking skills to make plenty of fantastic designs. During the making process, the team members often use critical thinking skills to come up with the disadvantages of the designs. Also, they had to use communication skills to cooperate with other members. In the end, some teams even created some crossbows which could shoot a long distance. However, the teams were supposed to obey the principle of trebuchets. As a result, it did not count. But the various kinds of trebuchets were impressive, and they had a competition to judge the greatest one.

These two activities were unforgettable, since it not only improved our English skills, but also helped us promote core competency skills and relationship between classmates.

This past November, grade 10 and grade 12 students at Luwan Senior High School wrote different standardized assessments that are a graduation requirement for all BC students. The tests are in the areas of grade 10 numeracy, grade 10 literacy, and grade 12 literacy. Students are scored on a four-point scale, with 4 as a perfect score.

Just this past week, the test results were released, and we are happy to see that Luwan BC students have continued to show their outstanding abilities. In the area of grade 10 literacy, more than double the percentage of Luwan BC students scored a 4 compared to the BC offshore average, and 65.71% scored a three (compared to the BC offshore average of 42.7%). In the area of grade 10 numeracy, more than double the percentage of Luwan BC students scored a 4 compared to the BC offshore average, just like in the grade 10 literacy assessment, and 58.06% scored a 3 compared to the offshore average of 43.4%. Perhaps the most outstanding results lie in the grade 12 literacy exam, where almost 90% of Luwan BC students scored a 3 or 4 compared to the BC offshore average of a little over 60%. The significant increase in English literacy scores from grades 10 and 12 highlight the great success that students have at improving their English abilities during their 3 years at Luwan BC.

Please join us in congratulating Luwan BC students for their exceptional achievements!

The Autumn Celebration activity was held on the 31st of October this year. Despite the short preparation time, all the students showed up in their unique costumes. Some even dressed as ancient Chinese characters to respect our own culture. Students were split into teams in order to participate in the activities and they all strived to win “golden bars” for their house teams.

Everyone participated in the fun games actively and enjoyed the LWBC tradition with their friends. There were 6 games in total including Gambler’s Cafe, Musical Coffin, Lateral Thinking Puzzle, Guess Who, 1 2 3 Freeze, and Wolf Man Slaughter.

The president of the student council Peter first introduced the games and rules briefly. Then the activities began as the team leaders and hosts guided the students into different classrooms which were decorated beautifully by the student council.

All the games were designed carefully and thoughtfully. For both the “Lateral Thinking Puzzle” and the “Wolf Man Slaughter”, participants needed to find clues by listening to stories or instructions. The students were having fierce discussions as they worked together to win the games and receive special tickets designed by our media directors Summer and Rein.

The third game was “1,2,3 Freeze”, a traditional game played in previous years. Our teacher Mr. Chang helped host this game and told the students to follow the instructions and “freeze” when he said so. The students who made it successfully to the front of the classroom could grab candies from the table. However, other than giving out candies, our secretary Darwin dressed as a creepy clown and hid in the classroom to create some horror and screams.

The remaining two games were two classic games: “Guess Who” and “Musical Coffin”. For Guess who, the contestants described the Halloween-themed words without saying the words and one of the students tried to guess the word. And Musical Coffin was an adaptation of the game “Musical Chair” where spooky music was played and participants tried to grab a chair whenever the host paused the music, the one without a chair would be eliminated. There was only one lucky winner who got the last chair.

After all the games, Gambler’s Cafe was the best place to be, students could buy snacks and drinks with their tickets from the shop assistants, Jenny and Vanessa, to relax and enjoy. In addition, students could play with our staff Carol in an intense game of UNO.

Finally, we had a costume competition at the end and everyone had a great and memorable day.

We, BC G12, are about to face the problem of choosing a university. Because this is the first time we face such a choice, we feel confused and even clueless in choosing a major. Thus, Ms. Fortin asked many university recruiters to give presentations to show us their schools. These speeches are to help us better understand the characteristics of each university, why we want to go to this university, and what major we should study in this university, so as to give ourselves some goals and surpass last year’s efforts to get into our dream university. Not long ago, we were very lucky to hear a speech from McGill University. The teacher helped us understand the advantages, characteristics, geographical environment, etc. of McGill University to deepen our understanding of the school. She even made a specific analysis of each major in the university in order to help us solve the puzzling problem of choosing majors. In the final Q&A session, many students actively asked questions and the teacher patiently answered them. Through this question-and-answer mode, we cleared up some confusions. From her presentation, what I remembered most is when she told us that if we want to get an offer from the university during the early admissions stage, we must achieve a high average score of 97. Upon hearing this, the students in our class had new goals and became more motivated in learning. In a word, although the speech lasted only 40 minutes, the students had a deep understanding of the university and its major and had new goals in their study plans. I think this kind of university speech is very important and meaningful to us, I also hope that you can finally go to your favorite university with unremitting efforts in the future!

Every term in Luwan BC, we will have our Chit Chat competition and newspaper show. From my perspective, chit chat means that you need to communicate with everyone, whether your classmates or teachers in English at all times, anywhere in school. The purpose of this game is to practice our English communication skill. As we all know, when we go to the university in Canada, everything around us will become English. You must ask for help from your classmates and professors in English, so chit chat can help you to adapt to living abroad more easily and quickly in the future.

For the rules, the competition lasts about a month. Everyone will get three cards every day. If somebody is caught when he or she was speaking Chinese, he or she will lose a card, and eventually their group will lose points after school. Finally, the group with the lowest score will be required to sing a song in English that they have adapted in front of everyone. The winning group will get a pizza party which is paid for by the school. This is why our students enjoy this activity. They would inform each other they were speaking Chinese in order to get teachers to take away other people’s cards. Most importantly, some teachers are also keen on this “taking card” game. For instance, they will often approach you quietly, and when you whisper in Chinese, they will suddenly appear to take your card. So it is not easy to spend four weeks without losing a card. Many students think that chit chat provides us an opportunity to communicate in English. It creates a learning atmosphere for communication in English, and helps us improve our English-speaking skills. But sometimes communication with others may be reduced because individual words are unknown.

For our newspaper show, it’s an activity about designing clothes. Six teams need to use newspapers and tapes to design clothes which is similar to their team colour. There are a lot of different kinds of characters that were made, for example, a fire-breathing dragon from the red team,Green Lantern and Green Arrow from the green team, Warriors vs. Godzilla, and so on. But my preference is the characters made by grey team: Cai Xukun who is a boy devoted to music in “Just Because You’re So Beautiful”. He is a popular and very funny idol in China, especially for his dance. The students in grey team simulated his dance almost just like the original dance. This made everyone in the room burst into laughter, and the grey team won the championship without a doubt. On top of that, our teacher also made a character. He held a scepter in his left hand, a hamburger in his right, and a crown on his head. We called him “Burger King”.

Both Chit Chat and the newspaper show lead us to get many harvest. They not only help us to get used to the environment and life of university in advance, but also train our communication and critical thinking skill.

By: Peter Zhu

As we all know, the student council is very important to a school because it takes all of the responsibility for the events and activities such as Halloween and Christmas. Since the last year’s grade 12s graduated, the student council had to be rearranged to bring in some new blood. The school had already started one month, all of the students were becoming familiar with each other and it was just time to hold the student council election. All the students are looking forward to it.

Compared with the previous student council elections, a few students tend to make campaign speeches before the election this year. They visited different classes and provided their speech to let more students know about them, talking about their advantage and their opinion about the student council, to persuade others to vote for them.

Finally, on the first day after the national holiday period 4 in room 222, Mr. Chang started his introduction for the candidate speeches. We begin each year with the selection of two representatives for each grade, with various individuals vying for these places. They were Selina Bao, Emily Chen, Eric Chen, Alicia Hu, and Toshua Sun. They all gave us some excellent campaign speeches. The grade 11 speeches followed, and there were more contestants: Macy Cao, Evanie Han, Milia Lin, Angela Wu, Mary Yang, and Elaine Zhonglu, who were vying for two seats. Following that, we had three candidates contending for two spots in grade 12: Betty Jiang, Carol Shao, and Jeremy Qu.

After listening to all of the representative speeches, the atmosphere of the room became more intense as it was time for the battles of the higher-profile positions to start. This year student council needed to fill 2 Media Officer positions while having four competitors: Rein Guo, Summer Xu, and Lynn Xu. Also, 3 students (Neo Liu, Jenny Li, and Jason Liang) competed for the single position of Treasurer. It was such an intense battle between these students, where they shared their visions of what they would do if they were to be elected.

Position of Secretary, there are two candidates (Alyeesa Zhou, and Darwin Zhu) ran for this position finally, at last, we came to the most exciting part of the election, which is the presentation of candidates for Vice President and President. There is only one candidate– Vanessa Shi competed for the position of Vice President which received a vote of confidence as a result of this, while Richard Xu, Betty Jiang, and Peter Zhu competed to see who would lead the student council this year as the President.

Overall, every candidate gave voters an excellent speech, with the quality of speeches largely improved from previous years: some students provided imagery, metaphors in their speeches, and the votes were tense in that the gap between them was really small: some of the candidates were only two votes short of winning their positions.

On the second day, Mr. Chang announced the final winners of the election. The new grade 10 representatives are Selina Bao and Eric Chen; the new grade 11 representatives are Evanie Han and Angela Wu; the new grade 12 representatives are Betty Jiang and Coral Shao; the Treasurer this year is Jenny Li; the Media Officers this year are Summer Xu and Rein Guo; the Secretary this year is Darwin Zhu; the Vice President of this year is Vanessa Shi, and the President this year is Peter Zhu. Let’s look forward to their hard work and interesting activities this year!
