Movember is a charitable activity that happens in November to raise money and awareness about prostate cancer. For the Luwan BC students, it’s an event we didn’t have before.
Actually, Movember doesn’t have a long history. It originated in Melbourne, Australia in 2003. Movember began because a man thought there are many activities that focus on women’s sickness, but there is nothing for men. Men are always hiding their sickness until it gets really bad. Many people have the same opinion as him, so Movember started to become popular around the world.
As grade 12 students, this was the first and the last Movember I can participate in at Luwan Senior High School. What we did to celebrate Movember is donate money to Prostate Cancer Canada. The four groups that donated the most money had a chance to shave one teacher’s mustache which was grown for an entire month.
At first, all of us didn’t care a lot about the activity. We thought if there are six groups of people and four teachers, each group will have a 66% chance to shave the mustache. So we didn’t need to care. And one day, we suddenly found that Mr. Hazel donated money and said, “If the teachers donate the most money, they can be the ones to shave the mustaches.”
What’s more, three more teachers donated the money later. Their action inspired us to raise more money for the Movember. Everyone in our group tried to save some money from daily spending.
The final celebration happened on December 8. The Movember winners got the right to shave one teacher’s moustache. Canace with the Green Vipers got first place and the Grey Sharks got second place. Sharon, our team leader, shaved Mr. Berg’s mustache. Total donation for Movember were 851.47 RMB!
This year’s Movember was a success. I hope that Movember will keep going on in our school. And I hope that more and more people will notice Movember and join this worthwhile activity!
